The whole film has a dream-like quality and does a great job of making you question what is actually happening. What begins as a straight-forward outsider vs locals with Nicolas Cage being the outsider and a gang of local Australian surfers (led by the late Julian McMahon) transform into nightmarish battle for survival as our titular characters loses, well, damn near everything - leading to a rather unexpected ending. Cage doesn't stray too far into outlandish territory, either.
