Confessions ( Kokuhaku )

This is your first step to redemption...

A mesmerizing tapestry of violence and revenge, though not in any you would expect. Beginning with a brilliantly presented dialogue among a class room, an extended setup what's to come. The first sequence already being a fully formed, satisfying, and cathartic experience. Luckily, it doesn't end there. As each character importantly related to the initial crime begin telling their own sides of the story, or confessing them. Jumping around throughout the narrative is a tad hard to follow at first, but this quickly fades away and becomes incredibly engrossing. The performances are strong all along, especially Takako Matsu who is absolutely brilliant and chilling. I could see why this was Japans entry into the best foreign language film for the academy awards. It may have been far too ice cold and biting for the Oscar crowd. Not to mention downright unsettling and oddly moving. Don't miss this over-looked gem, it's one of a kind, and has one hell of an ending.
