The Train (1965)

A Direct Ancestor of "Die Hard"...

Burt Lancaster stars in this John Frankenheimer film that sets the standard for today's action films. Lean on dialogue but heavy on action, Lancaster leads a troupe of American and French freedom fighters on a mission to stop... a train.

Is it carrying explosives? Prisoners? War secrets? Nope -- just hundreds of the most famous works of art that the Nazis had commandeered from the French museums they'd raided. As Lancaster's men live and die around him, the film calls into question the ultimate value of art -- and why it matters.
