New in Theaters December 06: Playmobil: The Movie

While the end of December is going to bring an onslaught of releases, this weekend is the calm before the all-encompassing storm, bringing but a single, new wide release. It's yet another toy-based film but unlike LEGO and Trolls that struck while the iron was hot, Playmobil, based on a lesser IP, looks to make little impact at the box office. Even The LEGO Movie 2 suffered from fatigue - and I don't hold out much hope for Playmobil, which will be lucky to find a spot in the top five while Frozen II and Knives Out should have no problem continuing their strong runs at the box office.

PLAYMOBIL: THE MOVIE Early December is a perilous time to release any film - it's one of the few dead zone weekends pretty much every year. Thus the low expectations for this film fall even further. Originally set to release in August, STX pushed back the release until now - not that it is going to improve its chances. For one, it's going up against Frozen II - which has proven itself to be a massive hit with families and I don't see why it won't continue to be the biggest draw over the weekend. Two, while the film has a decent vocal cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jim Gaffigan, Meghan Trainor, Adam Lambert, Gabriel Bateman and Kenan Thompson among them - the whole thing just looks like a generic copy of The LEGO Movie. And, based on the talent involved, it will also have musical numbers thrown in for good (or annoying) measure. I can't imagine anyone choosing this over Frozen II, but maybe if your kids have already seen it eight or so times, this could be a reprieve. Still, I stand by my prediction this will have a hard time even finding a place in the top five.

It should be a very familiar box office as I don't see any changes coming, at least for this weekend. I'll be back on Sunday with the results.
