Iron Man 2 was released by Paramount Studios on May 7, 2010, and was the sequel of the first Iron Man movie released in 2008. The first Iron Man delivered an engaging plot, explosive battle scenes, and well developed characters, so the question is, Did Iron Man 2 improve upon the first movie’s story or did it fall short of its high expectations?
In Iron Man 2 viewers are stunned by intense action scenes that occur throughout the movie. The scenes include the antagonist (Ivan Vanko) mutilating formula 1 race cars with his electrically charged whips, Tony Stark (Iron Man) and “Rhodey”(Don Cheadle) fighting each other in Iron Man Suits, and the impressively destructive boss battle with Ivan and his Iron man droids. The only negative comments to the action scenes are that they were not long enough and the climax was wimpier than expected. All in all the explosions, imaginative new weapons, and combat scenes appeased the mind; at least in terms of action.
On the opposite side of the action was the conglomeration that made up the plot. The makers of Iron Man 2 attempted to bring in too much information into its plot, and Iron Man was faced with physical, mental, and emotional conflicts. Between competition from Justin Hammer (Weapons Inventor), affiliations with “Shield” and Natalie Rushman (Scarlett Johansson) , battles with Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), his imminent death from Palladium, relations with Pepper Potts, Government pressure to hand over his Iron Man suits, and the possible demise of Stark Industries Tony Stark had one too many servings on his plate. The information easily overwhelmed the viewers and lessened Iron Man 2’s appeal.
Ironically, while the plot had too much info it didn’t have enough comedic parts. The role of Tony Stark, being funny, sarcastic, and keen, was much less prominent in the second movie than in the first. And instead of thorough comedic input that would emulate Iron Man 1, most of the comedic roles resorted to quick one-liners. Yet Iron Man 2 was not devoid of all humor, because there were some hilariously funny parts, but the comedy was just in bits and more shallow than its predecessor.
In my opinion Iron Man 2 was not an excellent film, and instead was more of a satisfactory film that would appease audiences but not awe them. However since the producers included allusions to an upcoming movie titled The Avengers, that will join the Iron Man movies with the Hulk, Thor, and other characters, Iron Man 2 excited fans of other Marvel Superheroes. In conclusion Iron Man 2 serves as an action packed appetizer to future film productions.
