Atalante, L'

Dreamlike quality

This one's magical to me. It sustains a dreamlike quality from beginning to end. No doubt that's aided by the liquidy black-and-white photography and the period French music. Dita Parlo and Jean Daste, as the newlyweds, are imperfect and understated, creating romantic tension unlike you ever find onscreen these days. Michel Simon is the strangest comic foil I've ever seen in a movie. This one's a unique treasure.
