Irresistible and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

By Chris Kavan - 04/08/20 at 11:53 AM CT

At this point in time, I'm thankful for any movie I get to write about. Trolls World Tour just came out On Demand and Disney has announced they are skipping theaters for Artemis Fowl, which will debut on Disney+ later in the year - and haven't ruled out doing the same for other films (New Mutants has long been rumored to be moved to Hulu). Yet even with a theatrical landscape - movies still need ratings and that includes ones that are still scheduled to come out this year. This week there is but one - the political comedy Irresistible (currently scheduled for late May... for now). I'll take even a single movie these days.

It seems wrong to be talking about a political comedy given our current situation, but that's not stopping Irresistible from giving it a shot. Written and directed by Jon Stewart, the film follows retired Marin Colonel Gary Zimmer (Steve Carell), whose defense of undocumented workers in his small, conservative Wisconsin town catches the eye of Jack Hastings (Chris Cooper), a top strategist for the Democratic National Committee who sees an opportunity to gain a foothold in middle America. But his actions are countered by the Republicans who send in their own fixer, Faith Brewster (Rose Byrne) in a race that quickly spirals out of control. Mackenzie Davis, Natasha Lyonne, Topher Grace, Debra Messing and Will Sasso help round out the cast. Stewart is no stranger to making politics funny, having served as long-time host to the Daily Show. That being said, he has kept a relatively low profile since that gig (he did direct the 2014 drama Rosewater) but it will be nice to see what he can do. As I said, it seems odd now to consider politics funny at all, given what we've had to deal with - but maybe a good comedy is really what we need in these trying times. I don't know if that May date will stick, but I like Stewart and I like Carell and I want to see if they still make a good team. Rated R for language including sexual references.
