Stupid movie is stupid.

I don't understand how we're supposed to root for these characters when all they're doing is stealing vehicles and causing mayhem.

The chase scenes are filmed so… standard. It's just such a standard Hollywood action movie. Cut to shaky-cam and extreme close-up of Nicolas Cage's face. Cut to Hummers and Ferraris driving fast, hitting everything in their way. There are around five explosions in the opening chase. And of course everyone survives it and they stand up glamorously and we get our typical Michael Bay shot, where the camera goes around them while they stare heroically.
There is one scene in particular which is just riddled with Michael Bay-isms. He's famous for two things: Acting serious when you can't take it seriously and explosions.
In the scene, a marine and the …

Wham bam, thank you Sean and Nick….

Nicholas Cage is an FBI chemical weapons specialist. Sean Connery is the British SAS officer who once escaped from the famed prison. Ed Harris is the Marine general who has seen Marines under his command get killed in combat without a military burial or benefits to their families.

With the aid of some Marines, he hijacks a bunch of chemical weapons rockets which he then places on Alcatraz Island with the cover of a large number of tourist hostages. He takes the civilians hostage, and makes a threat to the FBI: give the fallen Marines recognition or he will launch the deadly VX gas at his disposal, on San Francisco.

Connery and Cage form an impressive on-screen duo. Ed Harris, John Spencer, William Forsythe, Michael Biehn and Tony Todd deliver great supporting roles and Hans …

A fun 130 minutes or so

The Rock is a film that does exactly what it sets out to do. It provides solid entertainment for around 130 minutes, making great use of several action set-pieces, such as shootouts and car chases, as well as the often used "doomsday scenario" in which large amounts of people may be killed if the heroes fail and the villains succeed.

However, what prevents it from becoming a great film is its mediocre screenplay containing numerous plot holes. For example, General Hummel (Harris) is upset that his unit has received no recognition for their clandestine (and illegal) operations. How could he expect the U.S. government to recognize his unit if they were engaging in illegal activity? Doing so would prove the existence of his unit and open pandora's box so to speak. Furthermore, there …

"The Rock" by Yojimbo

A crack team of US marines led by a disillusioned war hero take a group of tourists hostage and occupy the island of Alcatraz, threatening to wipe out San Francisco if their demands aren't met. In response the FBI call in the Navy seals, a chemical weapons expert and the only man ever to escape "the rock" to retake the island. Well, it's a Michael Bay film so you know what you're going to get; a bunch of neanderthals with bad haircuts running around shooting each other, expensive cars exploding into flames in slow motion and a camera that stubbornly will not stay still for a nano-second. The "plot" is nothing more than a series of ill-conceived excuses for ridiculously over the top set pieces, the characters a bunch of two dimensional caricatures who spout nothing but lame one liners and …

Unbelievable at times, but excellent nonetheless

The Rock is an action-packed movie set mainly on the famed Alcatraz Island which tells the story of "Brigadier General Francis Xavier Hummel," (Ed Harris) who, with a group of mercenaries, takes over one of the hardest prisons in the world to escape from -- Alcatraz. He is determined to get United States government to honor his men who lost their lives in service to their country during highly covert military operations by providing their families the same benefits and tributes due other war veterans -- by unleashing a deadly gas onto the San Francisco Bay area that kills within a matter of seconds.

The city's only hope are FBI chemical/biological weapons expert, "Stanley Goodspeed" (Nicholas Cage), and "John Patrick Mason" (Sir Sean Connery), a prisoner who does not exist in the …

Watch. This. Movie. Seriously, go now.

My favorite action movie that doesn't contain the words "Die" or "Hard" in the title, and potentially my favorite action movie PERIOD.

Aside from possessing all the typical things that make an action movie great, this movie also has a KILLER soundtrack. Hans Zimmer is a genius.

Sean Connery plays his favorite part, the British secret weapon. And while he's clearly not as young as he was when he was James Bond, the movie doesn't push his character too hard either, so you're not left wondering how some 60 year-old could be enduring punishment that only John Mclane can take.

Nicholas Cage plays what I think is his best sort of character, a neurotic and sarcastic good guy. His character also doesn't go from biochemist nerd to Rambo by the end of the movie either, which helps the …
