Never really as funny as it is quirky, but "Intolerable Cruelty" has all the charm and sensibilities of old-school comedies.

Although it's certainly not the Coen Brothers' most ambitious film, it's better than your typical romantic comedy. It harkens back to the screwball pairings of Hepburn and Tracy or Gable and Colbert. The script relies on wit and sophistication rather than vulgarity and wanton sex jokes.

For fans of the screwball comedy era of film, this Coen Brothers film is an energetic joy. It contains the usual off the wall Coen Bros. characters, but the madcap pace is amped up and the in depth and structured characters fall by the wayside. In another directing team's hands, this could be a recipe for disaster, but the Coens know the genre they are paying homage to and craft a film that is funny, satisfying, and never boring.
