The story, steeped in political intrigue, is compelling and the neo-noir scenes are beautifully shot. The hamfisted screenplay is what ultimately sinks Broken City from being a great piece of cinema, as it can't quite escape its inherent preachiness. There are some committed performances - from Wahlberg and Crowe - but they're bogged down by an overly-talky and cliched screenplay.

Broken City review

Daniel Corleone - wrote on 01/30/2014

From the start things seem slow moving coupled with a lot of conversations. Detective Billy Taggart (Marc Wahlberg) was convicted of murder, not self-defense and is met by Mayor Hostetler (Russell Crowe) to ask a favor. Cathleen Hostetler (Catherine Zeta-Jones) confronts Taggart. Such an All-Star cast and yet full of "talking" and various scenes that just ramble on and on testing the viewers patience for something to happen. Everything just felt scripted and a typical "Hollywood" flick instead of being authentic. Screenplay just iffy, characters were uninteresting and the pace sluggish. Only thing worth seeing is how the plot ends and Wahlberg and Crowes acting. If you're into politics and are fans of the artists then it would entice you. As for this reviewer, nothing special and …

Detective Billy Taggart (Marc Wahlberg) is accused of killing Luis Tolentino, a rapist but is cleared of all charges in the courts but the case cost Billy his badge and so he moves on to become a private investigator…. Mike Hammer style. Seven years pass and Billy is starting to forget what happened and has hooked up with the sister of the rapist’s victim and has even quit drinking but then he gets a call from his old boss and Mayor Hostetler (Russell Crowe) to look into some personal business as he is right in the thick of a neck and neck re-election campaign against Councilman Barry Pepper.

The Mayor has a beautiful wife Cathleen Hostetler (Catherine Zeta-Jones), whom he suspects of adultery. And The Major is willing to pay big bucks to keep it on the down low! Billy is happy …

Seen better films from cast involved!!

We will start this review by saying that I have seen better films from both Wahlberg and Crowe! The storyline here was alright but nothing to write home about let's put it that way. Director Allen Hughes who usually works alongside his brother Albert, works solo on this project and maybe that's why this project was sometimes majorly lackluster at times as many of the directing projects he has done with his brother such as Menace II Society, Dead Presidents and From Hell all films with riveting storylines.

This film is about an private investigator who used to be a Nypd cop who now runs his own business taking photos of people who have hired him in compromising positions with others then their spouses. Billy Taggart (Wahlberg) ends up getting hired by New York mayor Nicholas …
