I'm not quite sure what to make of this film. First, it's written by Diablo Cody. And I'll admit, I'm not a huge fan of her work. Juno, was good, but not great and this wasn't even as good as that film. We're supposed to be sympathetic towards Charlize Theron's character, but how can you? The performances are good, but I just have no feelings towards Theron's character. I think she got what she derserves. And I know 2013 was considered the year that cassettes became popular again, but what new model of car has a tape deck in it? Also, this movie came out in 2011, two years prior.

It's almost like Charlize Theron woke up morning and thought: "I feel like playing a bitch from now on." (YA, Prometheus, SW&H) But, again, she gives a really performance. I personally really liked Young Adult, but like Bad Teacher earlier in the year, this film has sort of a sympathetic message, but the main character deserves anything but sympathy. Regardless, this is a really good film featuring good performances and a witty script from Diablo Cody (Juno).

Competent but forgettable - it's one of those movies that will stick with you for a couple of days before simply fading away for lack of substance. Theron and Oswalt were good, but not good enough to elevate this beyond a generic piece of film. Skip it - you won't remember it anyways.

Charlize Theron gives a strong performance as Mavis, a selfish, deluded woman who returns to her childhood home to reunite with an ex-boyfriend, even though he's married and has a new baby. Patton Oswalt surprises as Matt, a former high school classmate that she connects with. These two performances are worth the watch alone, as we seem Mavis delude herself and Matt ground her. Patrick Wilson also stars as the ex, and though Wilson is a great actor, unfortunately his only role in this film is to be the object of Mavis' desire. A good watch for the interactions and to see just how far Mavis will go to snag the one that got away.

An average movie at best. It really has no point. Performances are Ok, particularly Patton Oswalt. Patrick Wilson lacks range and this movie shows it. The plot was Ok but there wasn't enough drama to grab my attention. It went through the motions and then ended. I can't recommend it in anyway, but it wasn't horrible.

Young Adult review

Surprisingly funny and meaningful. Some Kind of Wonderful like flick but with darker tones. Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) is a divorced writer who tries to woo back her old flame. She receives an email from Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson) and his wife Beth's (Elizabeth Reaser) new baby. Plot maybe ludicrous, even the character of Matt Freehauf (Patton Oswalt), still it's endearing qualities are its script and impressive showing of Charlize Theron. Best dialogues were "We just thought it was a nice memory." "It's good to keep those people in your life. The people who really know you best." from Hedda, "Sometimes in order to heal a few people have to get hurt." and "It's really difficult for me to be happy. And then for other people it just seems so simple. I know. They just grow up and th...
