Unbelievably dumb (even by Hollywood standards) space-bound actioner crammed to bursting with nonsensical cliches and two dimensional characters. And could someone PLEASE explain to me why a lunar rover would have a bloody mini-gun attached to it?? |

NASA discovers an asteroid about to crash to Earth. Dan Truman (Billy Bob Thornton) plans to embed a nuclear device 800 feet within the asteroid. A team is created for this project with the likes of Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis), A. J. Frost (Ben Affleck), "Rockhound" (Steve Buscemi), Grace (Liv Tyler) and "Bear" (Michael Clarke Duncan). So many stars and yet the cheesy dialogue, poor character development (despite the loaded talents involved) and stunning special effects reign. Armageddon is an example of a disastrous disaster film with the lack of basic elements of a good film. |

The outer space scenes are pretty riveting, but the drama is overblown and makes the movie feel bloated. Like most of Bay's movies, it's worth watching just for the spectacle. |

The Plot of Armageddon: While fixing a satellite in orbit, the Space Shuttle Atlantis is destroyed by a meteor shower, killing the entire team. Meteorites then bombard New York City and several other parts of the world, and NASA discovers that an asteroid named Dottie, named after Karl wife Dottie. Dottie is the size of Texas, and is travelling at 22,000 miles per hour; it will collide with Earth in 18 days, effectively destroying the planet. The scientists at NASA are cooperating with the Russian space station to watch meteor, and plan how to detonate a nuclear bomb in the Dottie’s core which will split it in two, and cause it to miss the Earth.... |

MegaBudget Action Flick = Decent Entertainment |
|
Once again Bruce Willis is given the simple task of saving the world in this mega-zillion-budget bigboys' joyride. An asteroid the size of Texas is about to do to us what another big rock did to the dinosaurs millions of years back (as we are told by Charlton "Moses" Heston in the opening credits). Swedish Peter Stormare -who steals every scene he's in as a russian cosmonaut- said to the media after seeing the final version of "Armageddon" that "They cut out all the good parts!", and apparently ever since he has tried to forget he ever involved himself in this project. The movie sure looks like they left hours on the cutting room floor, but if you just don't think too much about it what's left still makes for good friday night entertainment. Buscemi is once again left with all the smart r... |

Review - Armageddon (1998) |
|
When an asteroid of Biblical proportions is headed towards Earth, NASA hired the one man who could put a bomb in the middle of it, Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis). He and his crew try to save the world in “Armageddon.”
I’ve decided that Michael Bay is one of the smartest morons in Hollywood. He is quite possibly the worst director of our time, but it doesn’t matter because he chose to make big-budget action movies, which always bring in the masses, thus inspiring studios to hire him to once more destroy everything that is cinema.
“Armageddon” is no exception. There is one single plot present in the movie and only a trace of a subplot involving Stamper’s daughter Grace (Liv Tyler) being in love with Stamper’s co-worker, A.J. Frost (Ben Affleck). This of course goes nowhere you wouldn’t ... |
