A different kind of comedy - non-musical fans won't have as much fun, but overall there should be enough craziness for even musical haters to laugh with. Steve Coogan is too underrated - he shines and the musical at the end is pure joy. |

In the vien of many recent indie comedies, in that most of the humor is original but at the same time it is also irrelevant. Lots of lol moments. It'll put a smile on your face, which is better than being "raped in the face". |

Extremely Funny and Very Underated |

I had very good expectations when I saw the theatrical trailer for this movie. Somehow, I had a gut feeling that this would be one of the greatest comedies of the year (which is saying something, since last summer came out with some great comedies) and that it would largely be unrecognised by the critics. Well, I was right. The movie absolutely laugh-out-loud hysterical and was panned by critics. Didn't do to hot at the box office, either. But hey, that was a very competitive year. The plot is very creative, centering aroound an untalented Drama Teacher who can't act (masterfully potrayed by Steve Coogan) who, in an attempt to save the drama department, writes a sequal to William Shakespeare's Hamlet. A must-see and highly recomended |

Shakespeare blasphemy |
|
A clever, silly comedy that gets a lot of momentum from Coogan's all-stops pulled performance as the clumsy, beguiling drama teacher who writes the improbable title play; some weird moments can be found for sure, but it's consistently funny and the production of Hamlet 2 is pretty hilarious and entertaining. Final Grade: B

To see or not to see? |

I learned one thing from watching "Hamlet 2": my friend Kyle doesn't have a very good sense of humor! He loved this movie while I could barely stay awake.
It just didn't work for me. More jokes fell flat than generated laughter. It makes no sense; I normally love this type of humor. But how can you compete with "Waiting for Guffman", even if the similarities are minimal?
I guess the inconsistent tone was more apparent in "Hamlet 2". I got the feeling some basic storytelling fundamentals were forgotten. It didn't flow for me.
Sorry. From the looks of the average rating, I'm missing the boat. But I'll be content not boarding that sinking ship. |

The deuce is correct |

In what is probably the most outrageous comedy of the year, Hamlet 2 is the story of a high school drama program (Stever Coogan) who in a desperate attempt to save his failing drama program puts on an outrageous play. Lots of jokes directed at religion and race, but most of the humor comes off as "I can't believe they just said that" and it works brilliantly. By the time the show opens, it's met with much controversy that fuels its success.
Coogan is great, Keener and Arquette aren't given much to do but work well with what they have. The high school students though each have their own unique personalities and do a surprisingly good job. By the time the song Rock Me Sexy Jesus rolls around, you should the outrageous show starts to make sense.
I'm taking it down half a star bec... |
