This is quite effective and powerful... if you give it time to sink in. A thinking-man's sci-fi (much like 2001) - it can be slow at times but once you realize that's part of the beauty of this film, you come to appreciate it. Great film for sci-fi fans that want a movie that's bit more challenging, and ultimately rewarding, than the usual. |

A sci-fi film that is a little slow to get going, but packs an emotional punch by the conclusion. It contains some beautifully constructed shots and is a more thoughtful film than an action-oriented one. Not Tarkovsky's masterpiece, but an effective film nonetheless. |

Often coined the USSR's answer to 2001, 'Solyaris' is undoubtedly a masterpiece. In the face of Kubrick's existential space opera, though, it simply is not as impressive a masterpiece. No matter, as 'Solyaris' is still beautifully shot, scored, and acted... and will leave you arguably just as unnerved as ol' Stanley's film had. |

My first Tarkovsky. Awesome. The first 20-30 mins you start to wonder.. "did I choose right?" but, after the whole thing you realize that you can add a new masterpiece to your list. It's very similar to 2001, only that lacks of the epic. Fantastic treatment of our most hidden and profund desires and fears. Is not Tarkvosky's best, but I love sci-fi :0) |

This is as good as the remake, but more confusing. It does show some really good scenes and concepts but it's major let down is the pacing. This is not 2001 but a worthy edition into the sci-fi library back in the day. |

Solyaris review |
|
Psychologist Kris Kelvin (Donatas Banionis) spends his last day on Earth reminisce about his childhood home. Henri Burton (Vladislav Dvorzhetsky), a former space pilot, discloses something out of the ordinary. He mentioned witnessing an over-sized child on the ocean surface of Solaris. The tempo of the storytelling and lack of character development were some of the low-lights of the film. Most extended scenes were not beneficial to the plot. Performances, stunning cinematography, score and acting were really good. Screenplay was gorgeous with the following lines: Dr. Sartorius – “Man was created by Nature in order to explore it. As he approaches Truth he is fated to Knowledge.” Dr. Snaut – “Man needs man!” Kris Kelvin – “The salvation of humanity is in its shame!” Solyaris is we... |
