Wristcutters

I can't believe how overused the word "offed" is in this movie. Aren't there other ways to refer to suicides? Anyway, there were some decent performances, but the film wasn't that great. It was pretty forgettable. It was quirky, but not in a good way. It wasn't a total waste of time, but it may as well have been.

Lacking

"Wristcutters: A Love Story" lacked in comedy what it made up for in idea. A truly original work, the film left me with a bad taste in my mouth. It was underacted and underwritten, though the concept behind it was visionary. I loved the ideas behind many of the montages and subtle nuances, but I never actually laughed out loud nor had anything particularly move me.

Tom Waits..need more be said?

Wristcutters gets off with an excellent opening scene. Zia, the main character, is killing himself while listening to Tom Waits' 'Dead and Lovely.' The fact that Tom Waits is in this movie and that his music is being played really puts me in a very biased position. I think regardless of the quality of the movie it's worth checking out solely for those two facts. But anyway, the movie is about the afterlife for those who kill themselves, hence the title wristcutters. The basic story is about two guys, one being Zia and the other being Eugene, helping a girl that they met, Mikal, find the "people in charge" to help her get back to normal life because she didn't really "kill" herself. All in all its a pretty cliche love story that is based in a very interesting environment with a lot of "chu...

Give it a chance.

Don't be taken aback by the title. This is not an emo-ish, pro suicide movie, as you might think. Yes, it is about suicide, but it is not really what you would think. It starts off as Zia (Patrick Fugit), heartbroken after his breakup with his girlfriend, Desiree, commiting suicide by slitting his wrists, and going into the afterlife for people who have commited suicide- which is gloomy, ugly, depressing, and you literally cannot smile. While there, he finds out that Desiree commited suicide after him, and of course, with his Russian rocker friend by his side, he sets out to find her. On their journey, they meet a quirky girl named Mikal, who claims she is there by mistake. Yes, it may seem like a dark and gloomy movie, but it actually is not. It can be funny, and it does have a happy end...

I wanted a miracle, even if it was a stupid one

The afterlife, in this comedy, is just like this world -- only crappier. The landscape is ugly, the city's are concrete and run-down, and nothing ever works right. Hell, for suicides, is working in a hamburger joint and living in a dingy apartment with an Austrian guy who complains when you eat his cottage cheese.

When Zia (Patrick Fugit) learns his ex-girlfriend has also commited suicide, he goes on a quest to find her with his friend Eugene -- a Russian rocker who electrocuted himself on stage. They pick up a hitchhiker who refuses to conform to the afterlife: she intends to find "the people in charge" and demand they send her back to life.

A romantic-comedy that won a number of Indie awards, Wristcutter's is also an "Edge-of-the-Construct" film, like the Truman Show and th...
