Thoughts around The Tall Man

As usual when I review movies here, I will talk about my thoughts around the movie, rather than the movie itself, as you learn everything you should know from the plot outline before you see the movie.

I agree with the other gentlemen here that this was certainly not what I expected at all. I too got a thing for Jessica Biel, the story facinated me, and on the overall this was a solid movie. I do have some issues with the label this movie has gotten. In my mind this is not a horror movie at all. It's disturbing, yes but on a purely psychologial lvl, something in my book makes this a mystery thriller.

Biel shines in creepy mystery.

Pascal Laugier's follow up to his beast of a debut Martyrs is something of a different flavor. Jessica Biel, who I have always liked, gives an oscar worthy performance here (no joke.) I was simply stunned by her every second, this is certainly the top performance of her entire career, pity that she probably wont get any accolades for it. But she deserves them. While Martyrs was a graphic, disturbing, disorienting assault on the senses, Laugier shows he can be restrained and yet still make a satisfying picture. Boasting palpable atmosphere in spades, some truly unique twists, and some very creepy sequences, Laugier lays out the cards for you, makes you think you know the story, and then pulls the rug from beneath your feet.
