Tall Man, The (2012)
Biel shines in creepy mystery.
Pascal Laugier's follow up to his beast of a debut Martyrs is something of a different flavor. Jessica Biel, who I have always liked, gives an oscar worthy performance here (no joke.) I was simply stunned by her every second, this is certainly the top performance of her entire career, pity that she probably wont get any accolades for it. But she deserves them. While Martyrs was a graphic, disturbing, disorienting assault on the senses, Laugier shows he can be restrained and yet still make a satisfying picture. Boasting palpable atmosphere in spades, some truly unique twists, and some very creepy sequences, Laugier lays out the cards for you, makes you think you know the story, and then pulls the rug from beneath your feet. I look forward to what he does next, and I must repeat, Jessica Biel is a revelation here.
