Star Trek Into Darkness |

"Star Trek Into Darkness" by Yojimbo

When a rogue Federation agent launches a terrorist attack on the highest echelons of its hierarchy, the Enterprise is ordered into Klingon space to terminate him. JJ Abrams turns his revisionist hand to the most beloved of the Trek films, Wrath Of Khan, and does so with some aplomb. Gone are the cheesy trappings of the era in which it was made to be replaced by a more hard-edged, contemporary feel that thankfully tempers some of the more overly juvenile absurdities of the first outing. The rath... |

Great Gatsby, The (2013) |

A good, if not over-stylized adaptation of the classic novel. I was unfamiliar with the story, before going in, and I can see some of the literary greatness beneath the weight of this big production. Despite good performances all-around, I only felt the drama shine through in a few scenes. The ending falls short of having a much more emotional impact because of this. If nothing else, watching this film has made me want to read the famous novel. |

Review: The Great Gatsby
|

Baz Luhrmann's version of The Great Gatsby is, for the most part, an unremarkable film with few key moments of greatness. The film is ultimately what I feared it would turn out being - style over substance. It's bloated with intense style and bombastic visuals, and it's as clear as daylight that Luhrmann preferred putting his mindset on those elements rather than the true heart of the story.
I read the book by F. Scott Fitzgerald last year in 10th grade, and the only film adaptation I've se... |

The Good (but not great) Gatsby
|

The Great Gatsby is as much of a sensory overload as his best films (Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet) and a huge improvement over his bloated and dull 'Australia'. With that said, this particular adaptation of the novel is not without it's flaws. There are many sequences that are just great cinema, from the lavish parties, and wonderful scenes of compulsively watchable character interactions. Performances are solid all the way, DiCaprio giving one of his best performances, Carey Mulligan a... |

Peeples

Peeples (2013) PG-13 Wade Walker (Craig Robinson) wants to marry Grace Peeples (Kerry Washington), but he knows that she is a “daddy’s girl” and must get permission from her father (David Allen Grier) to marry her. So, Wade decides to crash the Peeples family reunion to meet the parents, but Wade doesn’t get the warm reception he was expecting. I liked Craig Robinson in the lead role, thought he should stay in the comedy world, his attempts to do some dramatic parts in this film didn't qu... |

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby (2013) PG-13 Nick (Tobey Maquire) is a New York stockbroker at the height of the Roaring Twenties. Along with his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), he gets pulled into the mesmerizing world of Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), whose wealth and fame for staging elaborate parties are legendary. But, all that glitters is not gold and the more Nick finds out about Gatsby, the more puzzling the millionaire becomes. Gatsby says a line that looks like the director, Baz Luhrmann, take... |

Gatsby..."The Great"

Two things I must admit, 1. I love this book. It truly is "The Great American Novel." 2. I've never seen a film by Baz Luhrmann before.
Now that that is out of the way, wow, what can I say. First, I was quite disappointed in this film. I had extremely high expectations and they weren't even close to being met. I know this is Luhrmann's schtick, but he went way over the top on the production of this film. It's as if he had a million ideas in his head and he said, "Fuck It! I'm gonna u... |

Mud |
Rating of: 4/4

'Mud' is a southern lesson in growing pains that presents themes of friendship, trust, and heart over mind. There is a complete feeling of authenticity to this film, from the writing and acting, to the setting, and down to the complexity of thoughts and emotions from it's main character. Tye Sheridan is wholly believable as a young teen seeking that adult recognition. The film is a slow burn, whose underlying mysteries grow with tensity until the finale. I like how each character's layers a... |
