Pickup on South Street review

A film that encompasses a Communist spy, pickpocket and a wise old lady trying to survive. An important microfilm from Candy's (Peters) bag was stolen by a pickpocket. Skip McCoy is the culprit based on Moe's description. Captain Dan Tiger and Winoki investigates while Joey and Candy argue over a missing frame. Some minor hindsight's this reviewer noticed were the lack of sufficient background importance on the microfilm, the relationship of Joey and Candy and some dragging scenes. The camera direction was outstanding and score climactic which fit the tense scenes. Acting were believable but the true highlight was the affable Thelma Ritter as Moe, who was nominated Best Actress in a Supporting Role. So many smart lines like: "Is it my fault the cost of living goes up?" "Stop using your hand and use your head. and "Money that's going to make me happy." - Moe. and from Skip - "Things happen. That's how." A spectacular film-noir, Pickup on South Street touches on various subjects such as earning a living, survival in a difficult economy, trust and love.
