"Depression is the inability to construct a future." Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara) attempts suicide because of her depression. Jonathan (Jude Law) contacts Emily's previous psychiatrist, Victoria (Catherine Zeta-Jones), recommends that Jonathan put Emily on a new drug called Ablixa. Martin is killed after Emily takes Ablixa. The most noticeable performance that should be recognized by the Awards bodies was Rooney Mara. It shows her acting range from being deceptively authentic and effective in her role since the ending had a certain twist tailor fit for the thriller genre. Only reservation this reviewer had was the pace, which slowed down when Jonathan tried to find out the truth. The soundtrack felt out of place as well. Nevertheless, the powerhouse acting and superb direction provided entertaining character study. Side Effects shows the detrimental effects of pursuit of the facts which effects family, motive and greed. Surprisingly fascinating for a thriller, finally Steven Soderbergh is back.
