Tree of Life review

Not a movie for everyone’s appreciation, especially those who always requires a swift and structured pace of storytelling with a basic plot. This one really caught me by surprise in terms of its overall direction. It’s title has several meanings: a metaphor describing the interrelatedness of living things through evolution, mystical concept within the Kabbalah of Judaism, the tree in the Garden of Eden and many more, such as the film itself. The story centers on the O’Brien family in the early days with cut scenes of the mature Jack. It portrays a strict and disciplined father and an understanding mother.

The screenplay by itself was outstanding with a few though provoking quotes from the picture: Mr. O’Brien - “You control your own destiny.” Mrs. O’Brien - The only way to be happy is to love. Unless you love, your life will flash by. “Do good to them. Wonder. Hope.” “Help each other. Love everyone. Every leaf. Every ray of light. Forgive.” Young Jack – “Help me to be thankful for everything I've got.” Its cinematography was impressive and artistic, like viewing a huge canvass such as the formation of the universe, overhead shots and a distinct look at Mother Nature. Performances all around were authentic matched with wonderful set-pieces to differentiate the era. The enchanting score made the picture more vibrant and colorful.

The movie displayed pure human emotions mixed with the vastness of the universe including Earth. Special effects were very authentic, from the dinosaurs, galaxies exhibited to outer space scenes. Style of direction was unique and allows the visuals and characters to describe the story. The images embodied and symbolized fate, life, surviving the corporate world, finding happiness, meekness, forgiveness, love, family, relationships with siblings and value of creation in general be it our existence or our planet. A picture that is worth viewing and deservingly recognized, it is truly a poetic result. Tree of Life makes you realize your own personal (or even spiritual) interpretations or theories, such as its conclusion in my opinion is that the symbol of continuity, and that one has to give importance to everything that surrounds us.
