Blade Runner review

A film that stars Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, a retired Blade Runner who takes on one more task to “retire” 4 replicants in the year 2019. Replicants are robots manufactured by the powerful Tyrell Corporation with a lifespan of 4 years (as a fail-safe) only to prevent developing any emotions. The Replicants are Leon (Brion James), Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer), Zhora (Joanna Cassidy) and Pris (Daryl Hannah). Deckard falls for Rachel (Sean Young), an experimental replicant who believes she is human. Some nice lines in the picture: Leon – “Painful to live in fear, isn't it?” Roy – “I've done questionable things.” “I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I've watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those ... moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain. Time to die.” Rick – “I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life... anybody's life... my life.”

There were certain scenes that were a bit dragging, instead of having continuity in the film. It got moving with the chase of the 3 Replicants. Another detail this critic felt uncomfortable was the monotonous score which should have brought more life to the action scenes. I was impressed with the futuristic costumes, state-of-the-art gadgets, inventive settings and stunning cinematography. The themes of humanity (the tests given to distinguish Replicants), relishing life (Roy’s statement before his demise), pain and power (the corporations that manufacture Replicants) were present. Over all the movie could have been better if the tempo of storytelling were smoother, had a better score and much improved writing. Still, it is one of the landmark sci-fi films created with a unique premise, picturesque surroundings and universal subjects can be somewhat entertaining aside for some minor qualms this reviewer noticed. Blade Runner is still visually stunning and ground breaking.
