A love triangle between the 3 leads, an executive named Michael (Ben Stiller), Troy (Ethan Hawke) the carefree rocker and realistic filmmaker Lelaina (Winona Ryder). Lelaina’s friends Vickie (Janeane Garofalo ) and Sammy (Steve Zahn) have certain issues to deal with as well. In the end, only one man will triumph in being with Lelaina and obstacles that the friends tackle would be resolved. Memorable quotes: Lelaina - "I have work around here, and unfortunately Troy, you are a master at the art of time suckage." "I'd like to somehow make a difference in people's lives." "I mean, try at something for once in your life. Do something about it, but you know what? You better do it now, and you better do it fast, because the world doesn't owe you any favors." Troy – “I am any orders to make the world a better place.” "I'm bursting with fruit flavor." Vickie – “Laney, sex is the quickest way to ruin a friendship.”
I feel this is one of the most underrated flicks to grace onscreen. Aside from the intellectual dialogues with convincing performances, it also has a delightful soundtrack. The so called Gen-X film had engaging topics, such as friendship, relationships and having a direction and being proud of your identity. Winona Ryder is the best choice as Lelaina, her style and charisma was just infectious. Ethan Hawke is a talent in terms of depicting smart characters with catchy phrases to divulge. Even the supporting role of Garofalo was hilarious. In the words of Lelaina – “I mean, try at something for once in your life. Do something about it, but you know what? You better do it now, and you better do it fast, because the world doesn't owe you any favors.” Try watching this film and you will not regret it. Reality Bites is a realistic take on the real world and the people we interact in our daily lives.
