Oblivion
Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise again.
2/4 stars

I was very interested and was anticipating this movie, simply because of the director and because I wanted to give a Tom Cruise movie another shot... And no shots will ever be given again.

I am tired of Tom Cruise. He made great movies in the nineties, with some pretty great performances attached to the movies, too. But ever since the last Mission: Impossible movie, he started playing the same character over and over again. Oblivion is no exception.
To name a few positives, the special effects and music are quite good in this. The score by M83 had a very pre-techno vibe, continuing the tradition after Tron Legacy had Daft Punk. But that's it.
The script is quite lazy and doesn't let anything happen to the characters. At the end of the movie, it feels like we're exactly where we started.
Tom Cruise makes no attempt to be anyone other than Tom Cruise. And that's everyone for that matter.
Morgan Freeman is in it. Are we going to do anything with him? No. Let us have him explain the convoluted plot and then just stop being in the movie.
The worst Bond girl is in this. Are we going to anything with her? No. She's there so we get the shockingly obvious twist in the beginning of the film.

There is a twist in the middle of the film, which I felt came out of nowhere. You may think it's a good thing the twist surprised me, but this was just way too underdeveloped and unprepared for something like that.
I'll be honest, I was kind of pissed off by the ending of this movie, actually. It felt like every conflict was solvable easily and every character was replaceable. If you've seen the movie, you will understand that it ended on a simple note.

It's not necessarily a bad movie, it just doesn't even try to be a good movie.
It has so much potential and talent, everything is underused and the script is predictable. Not a movie worth paying full admission for.
