Couples Retreat

Not that bad!

Couples retreat is about a couple who cannot have children and their marriage is falling apart because of it. They decide to go to an island with their friends to try and patch up their marriage while the others want to take advantage of a money-saving deal. They are expecting scuba diving, jet skiing etc. and are disconcerted to find that they, too, are expected to participate in the marriage skills enhancement regime which, of course, soon point up weaknesses in all their relationships.

Once they get there, they discover the island is indeed beautiful. But, wait. The resort is divided into two parts, the "east side", where singles dance and party, and the "west side" where couples must follow a planned day schedule set up by Monsieur Marcel (Jean Reno), a sort of new age guru and their temporary love leader along with Ken Jeong as a therapist (who was extremely funny in The Hangover and Role Models, but in this movie he simply goes by unnoticed). This includes 6 a.m. wake-ups, yoga rituals and long conversations with their counselors. Whew, everyone is ready to give up after the first day but they soon find out, it will be a trip they won't soon forget.

'Couples Retreat' has plenty of eye candy. The women: Kristin Davies, Malin Akerman and Kirsten Bell do their parts well and are beautiful. The setting in Bora Bora is absolutely breathtaking and very seductive, like the ideal summer holiday spot. In addition, A.R. Rahman's music is great. Vince Vaughn plays his usual sarcastic self with a girl that's too hot for him. Yes, it has some rather sexually suggestive scenes with the brilliantly over the top yoga instructor Salvador (Carlos Ponce.) but they are played for laughs and not personally offensive!
