This is a film my children watched countless times and I remember Christmases where I would be pottering over the Mince Pie making whilst they watched and I would be in tears as the songs lyrics pierced my heart. It is sentimental, but then I am too - too sentimental for some perhaps but as a tale of friendship, heroism and deeply felt loss this cartoon seems to be perfectly pitched and if the hearts strings are pulled, so be it. |

Based on the beloved novel of the same name by Peter S. Beagle who also wrote the film's screenplay.
This film has gorgeous visuals and smooth flowing animation thanks to the talented artists at Topcraft Studio in Japan (which also animated the pre-Ghibli movie Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind).
I would have rated this movie with 4 stars if it wasn't for its terrible soundtrack and weak voice acting from Mia Farrow, as the unicorn from the title, and Jeff Bridges, as the most annoying ever prince of fairy tales stories. |

A story with many adult themes, this film has garnered a cult-following in recent years. The main character of the story is a Unicorn, who realizes that she may be the last of her kind and sets out on a journey to discover what has happened to all the other Unicorns of the world. Rumor has it a live-action film is in the works, although it is much delayed. A star-studded cast lends considerable voice talent to average animation (by today's standards - excellent for 1982). This film is definitely worth a look for anyone with an interest in animation. |
