Plot Outline:

Two French soldiers, and aristocrat and a mechanic, find themselves in the same German POW camp. They meet a variety of prisoners, including Rosenthal, son of a wealthy banker, but are separated before they can escape. The duo are sent to a fortress, said to be impenetrable, where they meet back up with Rosenthal. While one of them befriends the aristocratic operator of their prison, the other two continue to plan an impossible escape. -- Chris Kavan

A film that doesn't at all feel its age. The emotion and humanity exhibited by the characters, the tight plot, and the grand setpieces make this film as watchable and exciting as any other classic movie. Definitely Renoir's very best film.

Grand Illusion ( grande illusion, La) review

"Neither you and I can stop the march of time." A film that focuses on the journey of aristocratic Captain de Boeldieu (Pierre Fresnay) and Lieutenant Maréchal (Jean Gabin). Plot somewhat difficult to follow and pace sluggish. The score played a huge part of the film and screenplay well written. There are many times where a film is highly acclaimed and included in the best of lists, the movie is no stranger to these beliefs. Unfortunately, this film never appealed to this reviewer. The length would have been unnoticed if there were more interesting things going with the leads, not just babble and move around. Grand Illusion (grande illusion, La) may have been widely recognized and influential, for this rater, it was an average war drama which brings nothing new to the drama couple...
