Plot: Before it became a state, Hawaii has a history and culture all its own. Eddie Aikau was born into a large though somewhat poor family. He found his calling in surfing and rose to become a legend in the sport. He also became the first lifeguard of Waikiki Beach, helping to save hundreds of lives. After winning his biggest victory at age 35, he retired and, on an ill-fated journey to Polynesian, he was taken away suddenly. But Aikau lives on in the world's greatest surfing competition with a motto as indomitable as the man himself: Eddie Would Go. -- Chris Kavan

A story unfamiliar to those outside of surfing (and that one episode of Drunk History), Eddie Aikau should be a name as big as any of the great sports stars. But his fascinating life (and tragic death) is largely overlooked. Lucky for us, ESPN's continued excellent documentary series 30 for 30 shines a light on this pioneer, lifesaver and inspiration. As uplifting a story you will hear, even with the death comes a new life and though Eddie Would Go may still be mostly confined to the world of surfing, we could all learn a lot by following his example.
