Give it its due

This film takes a little work to get through. It may be a little slow but the themes and lessons are worth your 101 minutes. It's capably written and directed. Both Guy Pearce (Memento, LA Confidential) and J.K. Simmons (Law & Order, Juno) deliver terrific performances. The themes are well executed, especially those of redemption and fate. These two writers have certainly not faltered in their career, having gone on to be nominated for an Oscar for their co-adaptation of Children of Men. Their next work comes out this Friday - Iron Man.

First Snow

It did not pay off. Fortune-telling storylines could go a million directions but this film chose the tedious path to nothingness. At first I thought it was just taking its time to set everything up but when I finally got tired of its slow pacing, I looked at the clock and it was halfway through the film. It seriously made me wonder what it was up to so I expected a little bit of a twist to happen... but it didn't. By the time the credits rolled, I couldn't believe I saw an entire film but it felt incredibly empty. Avoid this one if you can, if you don't end up being annoyed by its scattered ideas, you'll fall asleep due to its lack of progress.
