Decidedly offbeat crime-black comedy that does well in the first half. It milks its dark premise for callous humor and there’s good jokes. But the second half does stumble when it tries to become a more serious thriller. Vince Vaughn is having fun as a friendly if fiendish serial killer while Joaquin Phoenix is decent as the everyman protagonist. Easily the best performance in the movie is from Janeane Garofalo as a snarky FBI agent.
