It starts out slow and only gets slower, but Colin Firth brings his all to the leading role of this historical character study.

The Duke Of York hires an unconventional speech therapist when faced with Royal duties in the burgeoning media age to help him with a stammer that prevents his public speaking. The premise behind The King's Speech is a rather dry one and the trailers themselves make it seem to be a cross between The Madness Of King George and Pygmalion, but thanks to some winning performances and an interesting script portraying a behind the scenes window onto recent history it transcends the traditional comedy of manners formula that nearly all British films seem obliged to follow. The King's Speech review

Prince Albert, Duke of York/ King George V (Colin Firth), the second son of King George V has problems with speeches. Elizabeth, Duchess of York/Queen Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), helps in resolving this concern by seeking assistance from several Doctors, including Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). Astounding performances from the cast really made this film effective and appealing. Rush and Firth had on-screen chemistry while Helene Bonham Carter was charismatic. The score was suitable for most of the scenes and cinematography was elegant, with memorable historic locations. Its costume and surroundings of the 1920’s and 1930’s were recognized and screenplay was enchanting. A line from King George – “If I am King, where is my power? Can I declare war? Form a government? …

While the story is an admittedly old one and you occasionally feel the "Oscar-Whore" premise, it can't be denied that it is an excellent movie on its own regard. The true power of The King's Speech is in it's gorgeous set design, astonishing cinematography, and utterly flawless acting from the entire cast. Despite the seemingly boring premise, there is not a dull moment in the entire 2 hour run time. It is swiftly paced with witty touches of humor that lighten the feel of the heavily dramatic film that it can be. Kudos to Colin Firth especially for turning in the best acting performance I've seen since maybe Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood. Every aspect of King …
