I enjoyed the performances and got a real sense of both character's paranoia. The fact that much is not fully explained has me thinking about it more. You can't watch this film and not scratch yourself at least once.

Great premise, Ashley looked great and the Director did a great job leaving me feeling like I had bugs all over me. I swear for a week I was losing it after this film. Not much to go off of the movie did a great job with exploring the madness that lay within some insane peoples minds..Well done

The first fifteen minutes or so of this movie are fantastic, full of intriguing premise and striking character portrayals. However, the more the film goes on, the more ridiculous the plot becomes and, by proxy, the more ridiculous the things the actors are asked to do become. By the time Ashley Judd is naked, wrapped in tin foil, I was done.

This Film Bugs Me

To be reductionist, writing a psychological thriller boils down to 'pick an obsession (especially one that would thrive in a domestic environment) and gradually crank it up until your protagonist draws blood, either their own or another's'. Within that recipe lies vast potential for character study, mystery, scares, histrionic performances, and visuals of a most macabre nature. Bug is what happens when you follow the recipe and for no discernable reason it tastes awful. Looking back, perhaps you skimped on one ingredient (in this case, charting a plausible journey from loneliness to folie à deux in a timespan of week) and overcompensated with another (helicopter sounds), but fundamentally you just didn't know what you were trying to accomplish from the beginning and now what's left you …

It is not exactly a horror film. It's more like a psychological thriller. I did enjoy the over-the-top performances because it's the only thing it has going for it. The story is very mysterious to the point of excess, which made me not care what happened to the characters in the end; the tone of it, though very versatile, felt forced at times; and none of the characters are relatable. Don't even get me started with the political implications. Still, I like the film a bit because, most of the time, we are in one room observing three people or less interact. The film does not offer easy answers to our questions. I personally think it would have elevated the film if they did. Still, this is not a bad movie. It's just very in-your-face and unintentionally comedic.

Great psychological horror, creepy not scary

Josh C - wrote on 11/11/2007

This movie was not at all what I expected. I came in thinking it was a flat our horror filled with cheap scares and lots of gore. But that is not at all what Bug is like. It is more of a psychological horror. It doesn't really have any "true scares" but the whole movie is creepy to watch and by the end I felt weirded out which is always a good sign with any horror.

The acting and dialog of Ashley Judd and Michael Shannon's characters was suburb (some thing I am not used to saying about a horror movie). I felt the plot was good but mostly predictable in terms of the overall picture but it was still executed well and there were lots of little surprises along the way. Most of the movie resembled a thriller/drama and it wasn't until a couple of key scenes like Michael Shannon ripping out …
