Drawing a cue from his frequent collaborator, Wes Anderson, Noah Baumbach directs a film full of dark comedy and quiet revelation about a severely fractured family. The film's best moments are its most human ones, rooted in basic emotion. When the film gets too obsessed with being odd or indie, it falls apart. |

"How to screw up your kids."
I thought the writing was smart and generated several talking points, but the characters' actions and words can be so pungent it ultimately distracts from the themes of the movie. |

An acute, well-written, highly personal drama of an already fractured family and their struggle with parental separation; nicely acted (especially by Jeff Daniels) and full of insight, but very little is solved by the end. Final Grade: B+ |

"The Squid And The Whale" by Yojimbo |

The Squid And the Whale is a typical "indie" movie. It has a script that is based upon an interesting idea (the effect of divorce between two middle class intellectuals upon their children), some well written characters and a smattering of funny lines and odd situations. But that's it. It doesn't GO anywhere. There is no attempt at a narrative plot and it basically just leaves you hanging there, trying to make sense of it and to me, that's just as lazy as throwing in a gratuitous love interest or a pointless car chase. Jeff Daniels is as great as always, playing a domineering self obsessed asshole in a way that lesser actors wouldn't touch for fear of tainting their "image". The rest of the cast are also very good and it definitely has moments, but a collection of moments does not necessa... |
