"Planet Terror" by Yojimbo

A deadly plague that turns the populace into flesh eating mutants is released into the atmosphere and a band of misfits join together to fight their way to safety. Robert Rodriguez' pastiche of seventies and eighties style schlock horror seemed like a real breath of fresh air to me. The fact that two of its greatest exponents, Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson have been heading further and further down the overlong, sterile, technology orientated road of mainstream cinema makes it all the more ironic. Tarantino and Rodriguez seem to be headed completely in the opposite direction, concentrating on entertainment rather than ego and in this film they deliver just the right blend of tongue in cheek humour, knowing homage and outrageous gore the likes of which I haven't seen since Evil Dead 2. Planet Terror review

Cherry Darling (Rose McGowan) quits her job and hitches a ride with 'El Wray' (Freddy Rodriguez). Lt. Muldoon (Bruce Willis) makes a deal with a businessman/scientist named Abby (Naveen Andrews). This is a fun, ridiculous (how can one fire a gun with a broken leg) but technically brilliant (450 effects, bloody lens, blending, editing, cg, puppetry, etc.) with an interesting plot. The effect used on the film was fascinating, disclosed on the bonus special features on the 2nd disc. Planet Terror is an entertaining horror with a few laughable...

Grindhouse: Planet Terror

The definition of a B-movie. If one wants gore, one will find it here. If one wants to watch a film with an apocalyptic feel to it, one can find it here. If one wants to have non-stereotypical characters and a captivating zombie film along the lines of "Shaun of the Dead" or "28 Days Later," unfortunately one will not find it here. I'm starting to be thoroughly convinced that Rose McGowan can't act. Upon watching her, I realized that she acts the same here, like she's still in the show "Charmed." In films like this, I don't consider believability or common sense as a big factor. What I look for is how the story progresses. Unfortunately, it was not strong in that category either. This being half of the "Grindhouse" experience, I very much prefer "Death Proof" for its strong script and del...
