Man of the Year (1996)

Blondes have more fun

Man of the Year from Brazil, mines the same territory as City of God, but any comparison with that extraordinary work would be unfavourable. Jose's Fonseca's film is a powerful and violent story of a moody chancer whose life is transformed when he dyes his hair blonde for a bet. On the face of it, it's an unlikely premise and yet when seen in the machismo context of the Rio barrios, it acquires a logic and power all of its own. The title has a bitter irony to it, and not just because the real stars of the film are the two women in the life of this homen d' anno: Claudia Abreu and Natalia Lage.
