A film that works because it treats its subject matter with far more depth and intelligence than many films might give. Although it technically takes a side it does not take it in a foolish manner, which it takes those on the other side of just being evil or wrong. It actually gives everyone their do without going over the top. I might disagree with the film in its argument but it still makes a good one which is why it works. The film is effective in all aspects and works very well. Many films take one side and try to strengthen that side without caring for the real sides of an issue but not this film and that is why it works.
Oscar Nominee Best Actor Sean Penn 4/5- Finally I see a Sean Penn performance where he does not over act the part. Well he does a little at first but then later especially his last scenes he goes for subtly and realism which works well for the film and the character. Rather than acting over the top with emotion he gives the right amount and properly for once completely the opposite of Mystic River.
