Protagonist (2007)

A Solid Small Documentary

This movie feels like a college thesis. That said, I liked it a bit because it was done in a focused manner. I liked how four people's lives that seem so different end up having a commonality: their lives following a Euripidean dramatic structure. It would have been a lot better if the audiences got a taste of a woman's perspective instead of just all four men. By not presenting a woman's point of view, it made me wonder if the Euripidean dramatic structure solely apply to men. But luckily, the four men's lives are interesting: the martial arts student wanted to belong, the "ex-gay" evangelist desperately wanted to be something he's not, the bank robber craves power since as a child he did not taste it, and the German terrorist wanted to achieve redemption. Since the movie is short, it has no choice but to present its evidence in a methodical and linear manner so everything feels like they fit together. For a small documentary, I'd say it's pretty solid. Go see it if you have the time.
