Skyline Review

Yeah this movie has definatley been getting some crap reviews as of late, and truth be told I can pretty much understand why. Basically the story is that a couple is traveling to Los Angeles for their friends birthday and they party to their heart's content. Then early the next morning, blue lights pop out of the sky and are abducting people by the masses and now Jarrod, Elaine, Candice, and Terry are among the few remaining survivors who find out that aliens have come to abduct humanity from its home planet for who knows what reason? There is actually a reason why, but A) I don't feel like spoiling it and B) the reason will probably make people laugh their ends off. Of course by now you might be wondering, "Hm, where did I see this before?" If you're thinking Cloverfield, congratulations you have solved one piece of what this film basically is. Unfortunately I can't really say that it's because it does something new with the formula or adds some sort of depth to everything but also because this film is a mish-mash of several other works of sci-fi in recent years. If you want the spoiler free version of what to expect of this film, imagine Cloverfield as the base, then mash Independence Day and War of the Worlds together on top of it, then add a little District 9 on top (the ending at least), now you're watching Skyline. Truth be told I didn't exactly have very huge hopes for this film anyway being a product of the Brothers Strausse, the same guys who brought us Alien Vs. Predator Requiem. It's not all down hill though, for a film done on $10 million, this looks really good, I hope the director of Dragonball Reborn is taking note of this, and the alien designs are actually pretty cool. Unfortunatley that's about it in terms of pros, I was hoping for it to be more grand scale in the same vein of Independence Day or Transformers, but there's really only a handful of action sequences that mostly focus on the human characters running and occasionally getting the upper hand against the enemy. None of the performances really stand out either and at the same time they aren't really terrible, same with the music and the same with almost anything else. I'm not going to really defend this movie, but at the same time it's not exactly a terrible film. It's not The Last Airbender, I'll give it that much since the acting is actually bearable and the story never really does claim to be anything more than what it is despite the ending. Overall this isn't a bad film, nor is it really a good film, it simply is. Once you've seen it, that's pretty much it and if you've missed it, you didn't miss much. Overall the definition of a "rent out of curiousity" sort of film. I don't know if this sort of film will be able to warrant the sequel that was supposed to be rumored before release, mostly with the ending anyway, but maybe they'll have something to add if that does happen.
