Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Mediocre At Best

Well, it's no mystery that Robert Downey Jr. can take any role he wants and turn it into his own masterpiece. He really is a pleasure to watch on screen. . I can't say whether Holmes was kept true to character, because I've never read any of the books. Though, and correct me if I'm wrong, I'm quite certain that Holmes wasn't known for his "ass kicking" abilities. I believe that was an added trait.

The actual film was lacking. I was slightly turned off after the first 8 minutes once I realized that this was going to be one of those "supernatural" mysteries--very Scooby-Dooish. It seemed so out of place. Everytime something "supernatural" happened I felt like "Why is this happening? Can we get to the bottom of this already, because it clearly makes no sense." Now, if this is typically the types of mysteries that are in the original stories then this is all acceptable, and most of my opinion should be disregarded. Despite the whole Scooby-Doo mystery, I found the unfolding of it all to be very clever. Again, Downey was brilliant and witty and brought a lot of life to the story. Law and McAdams were also great as well, but the film would have been just the same if two unknown or less popular actors were cast for those parts (maybe not so much Watson...maybe).
