The Golden Compass
Why is everyone hating on this movie? It's great!
4/4 stars

I don't understand all the negative reviews. I waited over a year to see this since the reviews were bad so it just kept falling off of my list of movies to watch. When I finally did watch it I was startled at how good the story was.

The movie reminded me of Harry Potter, with all the magic and mystery, but I thought it was presented better. There was more action, better special effects and far less whining. Overall, it was a complete joy to watch and my only problem with this movie was the ending because I wanted more and didn't want to wait for the next one.

The acting was also good. Nicole Kidman's cold blooded character was really effective and Dakota Blue Richards showed she has a lot of potential.

The story was darker and had a more grown up message, which was probably why it was PG-13 in the first place. I don't picture small children understanding this movie. Not that there was a huge amount to take in on the first movie, but I assume as the journey goes on more will be explained.

Finally, everyone told me it is anti-Christianity. I don't know the whole story, but from what I have seen I think people are overreacting. Take it how you want, but I just don't see it. Besides it is a fantasy movie in an alternate world, if you can't use your imagination for 2 hours then this movie isn't for you anyhow.

Hey!I think I can explain the anti- Christianity a bit. I also didn't want to watch it because of that, but God is the center of my life and I try not to judge things before or even after I watched it. So I watched the movie and like you I could find nothing wrong with it. I then bought the book series and read it all, because I did not feel that it was wrong. In the third book the dark angels or whatever kills God and throughout the second and third books God isn't exactly placed in a good light. Still I say that the writer has an excellent imagination. However, he is not a Christian and boldly proclaims that he writes history not fiction. So he is doing a lot of damage to young minds in doubt over religion. People somehow got aware of this and in their ignorance pointed to the Golden Compass. I still say he is brilliant and if his talent was fuelled by God's love he could really have been great. There is nothing wrong with the Golden Compass and if he had continued the series like that it would really have been something. I am saying he should be forced to be Christian, because Christianity is a choice. He only has to keep his dark religious views out of his work. JRR Tolkien was a devoted catholic, but his works is purely imagination and truly amazing!anyway hope it helped and it really is a good movie.
