Hannibal Rising
5.5/10
1/4 stars

Action: 2/3 + Comedy: 0.5/2 + Love/Sex: 1/1 + Plot: 0.5/1 + Music: 0.5/1 + Good vs. Evil: 0.5/1 + Special Effects: 0.5/1 = 5.5/10 or 55%.

While Hannibal is a slightly better anti-hero than Jason Vorhees, the continued insistance to attempt to restore him to the Hopkins' glory days are tiring. When Hopkins' played Lecter one would not compare him to Jason, but now? Why not? It's just getting silly- staright to DVD silly.

This was not a great "Hannibal" movie. But I liked it for the fact that it was an attempt to help us "understand" Hannibal. In this film, unlike the others, we all are kind of pulling for Hannibal. In the later films, while we don't want Hannibal killed, we do want him stopped. But in this film, we want him to carry out the vengeance so richly deserved by these war criminals. II think most of us would feel that Hannibal is well within the right to seek out and destroy these men who cannibalized his sister. At the same time, as horrifying as his own cannibalism is, we kind of understand that this is his twisted way of getting even--perhaps even an attempt to "reclaim" his sister in some perverted way. Further, it gives rise to the premise that perhaps all of his later murders also carried some degree of "justice" in them. That is, we have some hope that he does not kill indiscriminately, but that he seeks to kill those who deserve it--or kills to protect those he deems worthy of his protection (e.g., the Jody Foster character, for whom he perhaps feels a brotherly concern, as he did for his own sister). In any case, those he killed seem to be those who are very deserving of it...and those, like the innocent police, who seek to keep him from doing what he apparently feels compelled to do out of some out of control sense of justice. So, not a scary movie in light of the other films, but one that helps us perhaps see certain insights into why he is "Hannibal the Cannibal."
