Action-drama set in 1898 where a tough-as-nails arms dealer allies with a beautiful Cuban rebel and a rival mercenary. Alan Ladd is adequate but his costar Lloyd Nolan has more amusing dialogue.
Supporting actors Chill Wills and Don Blackman have a believable interracial friendship. Their acting is good but it’s made uncomfortable when they’re established as former master-and-slave.
Given the time it came out, one has to wonder if it’s meant to serve as an anticommunist vehicle. It’s famous for featuring Cuban poet and martyr Jose Marti alive three years after his death.
Despite these problems, the movie is still entertaining as a matinee adventure flick.
