Regression

Paranoid Slow-Burn Mystery

'Regression' is a return to the slow-burn, chilling dark mystery format. There are horror elements which elevate certain scenes with fear and dread. It all worked for me. This is the one area that kept the mystery alive through most of the turn-less plot. Our protagonist's investigation has him stumbling around in the dark with few answers for a majority of the film. Paranoia builds slowly over time. We feel all of his passion and anguish involved in solving the crimes without any real evidence present. All of these facets play directly into the believable outcome of the whole ordeal. Everything makes sense and wraps around the main theme of the story. Some will not like the truths uncovered at the film's end because of anti-climactic excuses. I don't see how you could classify it that way when considering all of reasonings I just gave for the resolution. In a complete flip of events, we are shown an accurate representation of the collective hysteria regarding the crimes falsely associated with Satanic rituals. Similar occurrences happened during the time period shown. It is true to life in that sense. The come-and-go horror elements, lack of good characters, and wavering pace are the only hindrances. Don't believe the critical consensus on this one. It's worth your time if you're interested.
