The Green Inferno
Green Infer-NO
1.5/4 stars

'The Green Inferno', Eli Roth's ode to cannibal movies, was touted as something extreme. A movie that would bring those sickening, raw elements of 'Cannibal Holocaust' to a mainstream cinema. I'm sorry to say that this movie is not that. Not even close. Sure, there are some 'shock' moments throughout, but by today's standards they are just par for the course to the average horror movie enthusiast. That I can forgive. Those were not my expectations. I wanted something more like Roth's 'Hostel' series. Something that pushed the mainstream agenda in slight and gave a grueling, but fun, experience. I didn't get that either. The main flaw lies in the complete lack of tensity to the frightening situation of the captured individuals. When certain scenes were building to a tense climax, they instead ended in an out of tone humorous fashion. And the humor was of the unfunny low-brow type. The movie seems to be taking itself seriously for most of the runtime, yet these random jolts of stupid kept showing up. Being both intentionally funny and horrific at the same time is a feat that's not accomplished here. I found it annoying, but not as annoying as the cast of dumb and completely unlikable characters. The only saving grace being the surprisingly good lead actress. There were a couple of surprises in the lunacy of it all. That still doesn't save it from the great disappointment that it is.
