The Fantastic Four (2015)

'Fantastic' Frustration and Disappointment!

Another attempt at a 'Fantastic Four' movie. It's surprisingly the worst yet. For starters, one could barely even consider this a Fantastic Four movie. The character names and power-sets are pretty much the only things replicated from the well known comic property. A brand new origin, and an overhaul in tone, are on the agenda. It's dark for the sake of it. The most serious demeanor is carried through as the group's transformations are treated like that of BrundleFly's in Cronenberg's remake of 'The Fly'. I kid you not, the second half is a complete B-rate sci-fi horror flick that has more gruesome images than any non R-rated movie I've seen in a long time. What's worse is that this dark serious tone is offset by random stupid lapses in logic and a few lines of truly cringeworthy cheesy dialogue. There's no sense of wonder, no emphasis on super heroics, and no fun to be had. This film is all about doom and gloom. And I don't mean Dr. Doom, cause he's barely in it. I'm getting ahead of myself here. But, then again, so did the movie. What I mean by that is this movie felt like it was over before it even began. This is a short 1hr. & 45min endeavor that doesn't finish with it's first act until just past the 1hr. mark. Then it completely skips the second act and goes straight into a final conflict with absolutely no setup. The final fight is dealt with even quicker. It's a sloppy excuse for an action scene that lasts barely 5min, and it's the only action scene in the whole movie. This is literally the ONLY time we see the four heroes together on screen with their powers. I was ENRAGED with disappointment. This is NOT a superhero movie. The story is trying to be two different things at once. The lack of a second act leads to the painfully obvious conclusion that the film has been heavily cut in the editing room. I can believe all the bad 'behind the scenes' stories during the making of this film after witnessing the final product. It's another perfect example of too many people vying for creative control who shouldn't be. And now we have a movie that is a complete utter mess! It's a colossal disappointment! Not just as a superhero movie, but as a movie in general. I could've given this a 1 star rating for the first hour being almost average, but then I remembered all of that slow setup was wasted when no character development or comroadarie became established between the main four in that time. Nothing happened! This entire movie was a complete waste of time. I didn't pay to see it and I still want my money back.
