Escobar: Paradise Lost

'Paradise Lost' Indeed

Straight-forward story about a young man being caught in the middle of Pablo Escobar's downfall. The first half focuses on his budding romantic relationship and outside view of Escobar's dealings. It's a decent semi-slow build that leaves an air of mystery surrounding the drug kingpin's crimes. The second half increases tension when he inevitably has to take part in these dealings and winds up fighting for his life. The decisions he makes stay true to his character, yet there is some suspense in moments leading up to possible bloodshed where it's uncertain how far he will go. The violence comes off harsh due to the lack of empathy from opposing characters. I found it involving to a point. I would've liked to spend more time with Escobar. Benicio Del Toro is fantastic, as usual, while Hutcherson continues to be 'fine'. Though, he does better in those tense moments. The movie leaves a bit more desired in some areas. Still a decent watch.
