Prisoners (2013)

Engaging Adult Crime Story

'Prisoners' is a heavily dramatic crime film laden with a mysterious and harsh atmosphere. A closer sense of realism overshadows this film. It's dark, and slower paced, but never ceases in delivering edge-of-your-seat entertainment. This is due to the high level of involvement that I felt watching this case being solved and for the palpable emotional weight delivered by the characters. They are so well defined and tremendously acted. I'm mostly referring to Gyllenhaal and Jackman, because it's really their show. It is, at times, depressing and heartbreaking to see the turmoil the situation brings to both families of the little girls. That is what adds anticipation and urgency to resolving the crime at hand. It builds to some good twists and a finale that had me gripping my seat. Some audience members proclaimed a little aggravation towards the final moment, but I thought it was absolutely perfect.
