The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises is Good, But Dissapointing

Christopher Nolan is an interesting case of auteur. His Dark Knight Trilogy has become one of the most financially successful trilogies of all time, but at the same time he’s directed far more original pictures like Memento (one of my favorite movies of all time) and Following. He walks the line between serious film maker and blockbuster kingpin, and does so surprisingly well.

I personally love Nolan’s work and was (of course) super excited about The Dark Knight Rises; I wanted to see if he could top the Dark Knight.

The short version is he didn’t top The Dark Knight; he didn’t even top Batman Begins. I’m actually going to go ahead and put my head on the line and say that The Dark Knight Rises is the worst film Christopher Nolan has ever directed. I know that Christopher Nolan has a huge fan base (including myself) and I’m likely to get death threats for saying so, but, compared to Nolan’s other movies, The Dark Knight Rises kind of sucks.

Of course The Dark Knight Rises was the best super-hero movie to come out in 2012, but it just didn’t have the thrill or inventiveness of the other Batman movies. It just didn’t feel like they were trying as hard.

A comparable title would Gangs of New York. Like The Dark Knight Rises Gangs of New York was directed by a good director, Martin Scorsese, but did not live up to most of his other films. You can also compare Bane and Bill the Butcher who were both the best part of their respective film. The Dark knight Rises isn’t bad, I enjoyed it a lot (I even bought it on Blu-ray,) I was just hoping for something better. Hopefully Nolan’s next project will be more original.
