Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

Almost, but not quite

A cute movie, but lacking that little extra "something" to make it great. Perhaps I'm not the target audience?

I just think back to the movies of MY teenage years. I mean, has anything ever come close to a "Sixteen Candles" or "The Breakfast Club"? In my memory, those were amazing films! And they made lasting impressions on me and my peers. Do today's youngsters have the same reaction to this one?

If so, that's great. Because there have been far worse teenage comedies. But I don't relate to the... "mentality" of these characters. First of all, I couldn't get past the fact that high school seniors are staying out all night in New York City. Are they even of legal age to drink? (A major plot point revolves around a girl who always gets drunk.) Where are their parents? Is this what growing up is now like? It was sure different for me, although I was raised in a "small" town of 55,000.

The best scenes come near the end with only the two main characters, after we think their adventures have ended. Michael Cera is his funniest self and Kat Dennings even looks like a different girl after relaxing. I laughed harder here at small, throwaway lines than I did through most of the movie.

Skin Rating = 1 (out of 5). This is a guilty rating, considering the boy who rips off his shirt is so young. But he's hot. He and two other major characters are gay and it's wonderful that there sexuality is merely taken for granted! That's one part of today's youth that I hope rings true as depicted in the movie.
