Laurence Olivier is aces in this heavy-going soaper about a man who gives up his marriage and career for love and ends up in the gutter; strong support from Miriam Hopkins as his overbearing society wife, though it leaves a bitter taste by the end and while Jones is good in the title role, her character remains over-the-top. Final Grade: B
